IBM: PC Banking Still Preferred Over Mobile

IBM issued a new survey claiming that consumers will soon prefer mobile devices to surf the Web over PCs. Well, for most activities, anyway—the exception being for online banking and other money-related services.

The survey, conducted in the U.S., UK and China for IBM’s Institute for Business Value, showed that while the use of the mobile Web will significantly shift behavior among consumers, most will still prefer using a desk-bound PC over a mobile device for banking, trading, and shopping.

But over 50 percent would switch their Internet experience on a PC for a mobile device, according to IBM, in results that expand on its “Go Mobile, Grow” report issued in May. Seventy-one percent of respondents expect to “increase their usage of communication services such as obtaining maps and directions, instant messaging, social networking, emailing and reading the news from their mobile device,” according to a release.

The fast-growing mobile financial services markets in developing countries is where most opportunity for consumer adoption lies, the report states.
