Even Sophisticated Hackers Get Their Day

A federal grand jury has indicted eight men for hacking RBS Worldpay’s computer network last fall and stealing more than $9 million in half a day in a theft ring authorities call one of the most sophisticated in the world.
The men, from Russia, Estonia and Moldova, allegedly created phony debit cards to withdraw cash from ATMs in 280 cities in the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Italy, Hong Kong, Japan and Canada. After the theft, the hackers tried to “hide out” by destroying data stored on the card processing network.
Sergei Tsurikov, Victor Pleshchuk, Oleg Covelin and an unnamed hacker were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, computer fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft. Igor Grudjiev, Ronald Tsoi, Evelin Tsoi and Mihhail Jevgenov have been indicted for access device fraud.
Their alleged activity was spotted by RBS, which reported the breach to authorities.
