Commerce Bancshares Elevates D. W. Kemper
David W. Kemper, president and chief executive officer of Commerce Bancshares Inc., St. Louis, was named to the additional post of chairman of the multibank holding company, effective Oct. 31.
He succeeds James M. Kemper Jr., who will retire but continue on the boards of Commerce Bancshares and several affiliate banks. In addition, David Kemper will continue as chairman and chief executive officer of Commerce Bank of St. Louis.
Beth Johnson, a self-described math geek, is driving the bank's ESG strategy and training its employees to keep pace with industry trends.
The Cleveland-based bank is projecting steady growth in net interest income even as credit losses remain manageable. But Chairman and CEO Chris Gorman also said that he thinks a recession is likely.
