American Savings Taps Stemper as Market Head

Robert G. Stemper, banker and consultant, has been appointed director of marketing for American Savings Bank, White Plains, N.Y.

He succeeds Cheryl Bell, who resigned the top marketing post in August to pursue other interests.

Mr. Stemper is the author of several books on bank management and marketing strategies and a noted lecturer and seminar leader.

His banking career includes 16 years with Citibank and Chase Manhattan Bank, in which time he originated Citibank's Priority Services function and Chase's first personal Financial Center.

Before joining American Savings, Mr. Stemper founded his own firm, RGS Inc. in 1986. The firm specialized in consulting services and seminars for commercial banks and thrift institutions, insurance companies, and brokerage firms.

"Bob's mission is to help make American a more vigorous competitor in consumer banking," said W. Ronald Dietz, president and chief executive officer of the thrift.

Mr. Stemper, 49, said he hopes to "make an entrepreneur of each branch manager and to get every branch employee thinking in terms of achieving goals. Motivation is the key factor in successfully delivering new products."
