MARYLAND

The state Department of Economic and Employment Development has notified almost 45,000 Maryland workers that they may be eligible for up to 13 weeks of benefits under the new federal emergency unemployment compensation program.

Notices were sent out to those who exhausted their regular 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits on or after March 1.

By July 1992, about 82,000 unemployed Maryland workers may be eligible for the new program, receiving an average payment of $180 per week.

The statewide economic impact of the measure could reach $195 million.

According to the department, the added money could result in $60 million in added retail sales and $2.17 million in retail sales tax receipts.
