Chase Manhattan Bank is using technology as the cornerstone of a plan to revamp its retail banking network, according to the company's new technology czar.
Craig Goldman was named head of the bank's global technology operation last week. As chief information officer, a new position, Mr. Goldman, 47, is charged with accelerating the introduction of advanced technology for the bank's retail and other operating units that has been succesfully used by its wholesale bank.

"We need to redouble our efforts to make sure that our investments are more in tune with the bottom line," said Mr. Goldman.
Formerly senior vice president in charge of operations and technology for the North America sector, Mr. Goldman developed an information network for the wholesale banking group that provides extensive data on customers, bank, products, rates, markets, and financial reports on personal computers.
Mr. Goldman reports to John Scicutella, executive vice president. His appointment calls into question the role of Elaine Bond, a senior vice president and formerly Chase's chief technology officer. Ms. Bond could not be reached for comment.
