First Union to Sponsor Athletic Scholarships

First Union Corp. said on Wednesday that it would sponsor the scholar athlete program for the South Atlantic Conference. Under the program, the two Charlotte, N.C.-based organizations will recognize 11 male and female athletes in football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, and golf. Each school in the conference, which offers NCAA Division II competition, will receive a scholarship on behalf the program.

First Union - which serves the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee - is expanding its education and sports honors programs. It recognizes top athletes in secondary schools in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, N.C., and outstanding educators in North Carolina.
