Maxwell Denies Being Contacted on RTC Job
David O. Maxwell's name is in the hopper for the job of S&L bailout czar, but the former chairman of the Federal National Mortgage Association says all he knows about that is what he reads in the papers.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Mr. Maxwell said no one had contacted him about becoming chief executive officer of the Resolution Trust Corp. He declined to comment further. When he retired in Janaury, Mr. Maxwell, 60, said he was not interested in another full-time job. He is involved with housing research and nonprofit enterprises.
On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Nicholas Brady - who doubles as chairman of the RTC Oversight Board - said he is opening a search for a new executive to manage the beleaguered agency.
It was Oversight Board member Jack Kemp, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who brought up Mr. Maxwell's name at a Senate hearing on Wednesday. While Mr. Kemp was volunteering the former Fannie Mae chief for what looks like a thankless job, Mr. Brady kept mum.
Still, there is a certain logic to the match: Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Brady are longtime friends who met as Yale undergraduates. And giving the job to Mr. Maxwell, a Democrat with a statesman's reputation, could help defuse political tension over the RTC's performance.
