Conover to Head Denver Bank

C. Todd Conover, a former comptroller of the currency, was named on Wednesday as president and chief executive officer of Central Bancorp., Denver.

Central, owned since 1988 by Minneapolis-based First Bank System, has $1.75 billion in assets and 17 bank subsidiaries.

Mr. Conover's appointment takes effect Monday. He will also serve as chairman and chief executive officer of the Denver company's lead bank, Central National Bank.

Mr. Conover, 51, was appointed comptroller by President Reagan in 1981 and was a vocal proponent of deregulation. He left the post in 1985 to become chief executive officer of Equitec Financial Group, in Oakland, Calif. In 1987 he rejoined Edgar Dunn & Conover, a San Francisco-based consulting firm that he founded and then left to become comptroller.

At Central Bancorp. he replaces David A. Baumgarten, who was named president and chief executive officer of First Bank's Wisconsin affiliate in April.
