Scientific Atlanta to Install Satellite Network for Banca Serfin

Scientific Atlanta announced this week that it will install a $4 million dollar satellite network for Banca Serfin, one of Mexico's largest banking companies.

The satellite network will link Banca Serfin's Mexico City headquarters and four regional offices with 172 branches throughout Mexico. The project, when completed by the end of this year, will be one of the largest such networks in Latin America. Scientific Atlanta is a communications company based in Atlanta.

The network, which will use very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology, will handle all two-way data communications between the bank's computers and terminals, including automated teller machine transactions, branch automation, and centralized data processing.

The $6.5-billion asset Banca Serfin, owned by the Mexican government, will use the VSAT network instead of dial-up telephone lines that often offer spotty service.

Each of the bank's four regional offices will operate a satellite master station, enabling the bank to have network backup capabilities in case any one facility fails.
