Development Bank In Europe Hires Exec

LONDON -- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development said it appointed Ronald Freeman first vice president in charge of merchant banking.

Mr. Freeman will join the multilateral aid bank in June from his post as managing director and head of European investment banking at Salomon Brothers in London.

His appointment completes the bank's senior executive team of five vice presidents. The merchant banking job had been earmarked for a U.S. citizen and went unfilled since the European bank's start-up in April.

Mr. Freeman will be responsible for privatization, restructuring, and small-business-financing activities and for identifying investment opportunities in Eastern and Central Europe.
