FDIC May Curb Appraisal Rule

Bowing to what one official called "a large clamor" from the banking industry, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. will consider a plan at Thursday's board meeting to exempt some small real estate loans from appraisal requirements.

At issue is a part of the 1989 thrift legislation that requires licensing by the end of this year of appraisers handling transactions by federal insured institutions.
