AT and T Universal Card wins Baldrige award.

NEW YORK - AT&T Universal Card Services won a 1992 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from the U.S. Commerce Department.

The Universal card group, which relies on Synovus Financial Corp. of Columbus, Ga., for card issuing and data processing, was cited for a constant commitment to customer satisfaction.

AT&T said that it resolves 95% of the 1.2 million monthly customer inquiries or complaints on the first call, and that customer commendations come at the rate of 2,000 a month.

A second American Telephone and Telegraph Co. unit, AT&T Transmission Services, also received a Baldrige award, making AT&T the first corporation to win two since the program's inception in 1987.
