Dime of N.Y.'s profit totals $8.7 million.

NEW YORK -- Dime Savings Bank of New York said it earned $8.7 million, or 38 cents a share, in the third quarter, reversing a loss of 4.5 million, or 19 cents a share, in the 1991 third quarter.

The thrift also reported that nonperforming assets, at $1.03 billion, were down for the fourth consecutive quarter, to the lowest level since the first quarter of 1991. Total assets were down by about $500 million from year-end, to $9.4 billion.

For the nine months of 1992, earnings totaled $25.4 million, or $1.10 a share, compared with a loss of $40.1 million, or $1.73 a share, a year before.

The third-quarter net interest margin was 3.42 percentage points, compared with 2.59 points in the 1991 period.
