NYCE network hires marketing pro.

The NYCE automated teller machine network has appointed Thomas E. Honey, a former marketing manager at Visa and at DHL Worldwide Express, to beef up marketing efforts.

Mr. Honey is taking on the new position of executive vice president of marketing, sales, and product development. He will report to David A. Huemer, president and chief executive officer of NYCE, who replaced Alan Pohlman last month.

Rival Gearing Up

NYCE, based in Hackensack, N.J., is expected to see increased competition from the Philadelphia-based MAC network.

MAC is expected to be spun off by yearend into a joint venture involving its original owner, CoreStates Financial Corp., and three other superregional banks.

The joint venture has considerable research and development funds for new products, such as a "smart" card with an embedded computer chip.

While at Visa, Mr. Honey headed development of the Visa Travelers Check and the Visa Premium card programs. His appointment "reflects focus on product marketing," Mr. Huemer said.

He added that as NYCE brings its computer processing in-house this year, "we will need to take a hard look at our service strategy."
