Bank stocks turned in an uneven performance in themeless trading Tuesday.

"It's a mixed bag," said Henry Dickson at Kemper Securities Group.

Money-center banks were little changed. J.P. Morgan & Co. closed down 62.5 cents to $56.625, Chemical Banking Corp. gained 25 cents to $37.25, Citicorp added 12.5 cents, closing at $19.50, Bankers Trust New York Corp. lost 37.2 cents, closing at $57, and Chase Manhattan Corp. closed unchanged at $28.125.

Elsewhere, Fifth Third Bancorp gained $1 to $43, First Interstate advanced $1.25 to $41.50, Society Corp. rose 75 cents to $58.75, while Firstar Corp. fell 87.5 cents to $49.50.
