No amity here.

No sooner had Shawmut National Corp. announced that it would rename its Connecticut National Bank subsidiary Shawmut Bank than a local rival laid claim to the old name.

Amity Bank, a company based just outside New Haven, wants to change its name to Connecticut Bank of Commerce by yearend just as the Shawmut name change occurs. Shawmut doesn't like it.

"We're studying the issue to make sure there is no confusion in customers' minds," said Shawmut spokesman Robert Guenther.

David Lentini, president of Amity, said his company has received state approvals for the new name, and shrugs off the Shawmut concern.

"I can't see how there would be any confusion," he said.
