Bank link for Visa debit card.

Officials of Visa U.S.A. Inc. said a popular brand of software for electronic funds transfer had been modified to let banks accept Interlink debit cards for point-of-sale transactions.

Interlink is a Visa unit set up to enable holders of automated teller machine cards to make purchases at supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail outlets.

The announcement involved Base24 funds transfer software sold by Omaha-based Applied Communications Inc., a subsidiary of Tandem Computers Inc.

Executives at Applied Communications said they had enhanced Base24 so it can authorize and settle Interlink transactions. The company's software is in use at more than 150 financial institutions worldwide.

A similar upgrade was announced earlier in the year by Milwaukee-based Deluxe Data Systems Inc., another leading vendor of electronic funds transfer software.
