Banks stocks were largely up Monday as the Dow gained 5.45 points, closing at 3,398.69 as investor wariness continued.
Leading the gainers was Wells Fargo & Co., whose shares rose 87.5 cents, to $80, after falling $1.875 on Friday. Bankers Trust New York Corp. rose 87.5 cents, to $57.125.
Among the shares that lost ground were those of State Street Boston. Its shares fell 75 cents, to $36.25.
The top five banks and thrifts have combined total assets of nearly $13 trillion.
After several quarters of slumping investment banking and trading fees, the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company reported a big uptick from that division, which helped compensate for a large decline in net interest income.
