Gov. L. Douglas Wilder is scheduled to provide details about a proposed new football stadium for the Washington Redskins at an Aug. 14 hearing of the Virginia House and Senate's money committees.
Gov. Wilder and Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke announced on July 9 their intention to build a new home for the Redskins at Potomac Yard, an old railroad switching yard in Alexandria. But the two declined to say much about the proposal, saying the deal's wrinkles needed to be ironed out.
The governor did say, however, that the state's share of the project would run about $130 million, financed perhaps with tax-exempt bonds issued by a stadium authority. He also said the state would pay for the infrastructure, while Mr. Cooke would pay for the stadium itself.
Mr. Cooke said he intends to have the stadium, to be named Jack Kent Cooke Stadium at Potomac Yard, ready for the 1994 season.
At the Aug. 14 hearing, Gov. Wilder also will present a detailed report on the state's fiscal 1992 performance and provide an outlook for fiscal 1993. Preliminary figures show Virginia finished fiscal 1992 on June 30 with a $43.3 million tax-revenue surplus.
