RTC junk bond sales mount to $7.1 billion.

The Resolution Trust Corp. said it sold more than $860 million of high-yield, or junk, debt in the first six months of the year, bringing the total of $7.1 billion since August 1989.

The high-yield portfolio consists of securities from 43 failed institutions with $1.6 billion in face value: $1.5 billion of bonds; $312 million of preferred shares, common shares, and warrants; $171 million of interest in loans for highly leveraged transactions; and 30 limited-partnership interests.
