Societe Generale set to add China branch.

HONG KONG - Societe Generale of France said it received permission from Chinese authorities to open a branch in Canton.

The Paris-based institution is one of the first foreign banks to be allowed to open in the southern Chinese city. Bank of East Asia Ltd. and Nanyang Commercial Bank Ltd., both of Hong Kong, are expected to obtain similar approvals.

Societe Generale already opeerates a branch in Shenzhen, the special economic zone adjoining Hong Kong.
