Shawmut taps two as bank presidents.

Shawmut National Corp. said Wednesday that it had named two senior corporate officers to additional roles as presidents of its main banking subsidiaries.

The two, Allen W. Sanborn and Eileen S. Kraus, hold the rank of vice chairman.

Mr. Sanborn, 50, will become president of Shawmut Bank. Mrs. Kraus, 54, will assume the post as president of Connecticut National Bank. Both executives will report to Gunnar S. Overstrom, the company's president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Sanborn joined Shawmut this year. He had been vice chairman in charge of commercial lending, and real estate at BankAmerica Corp., but was forced out by its merger with Security Pacific Corp. At Shawmut he will continue to run commercial lending.

Mrs. Kraus is a 13-year Shawmut veteran, having joined its predecessor Hartford National Corp. as a vice president in charge of human resources. She remains in charge of Shawmut's consumer banking business.

Mr. Sanborn will continue to be based in Boston. Mrs. Kraus will continue to be based in Hartford.

James R. Dorsey, Shawmut's spokesman, said the promotions reflect the company's push to broaden its cadre of top executives and make the company, which is based in Hartford and Boston, more visible in the communities it services.

Shawmut, with $22.6 billion in assets, has been criticized for being too thin in the top ranks and overly subject to the whims of Mr. Overstrom and to those of its chairman and chief executive, Joel B. Alvord.
