Unemployment in Maryland dropped to a 1992 low of 6.5% in July, while employment "hit an all-time high," according to the state Department of Economic and Employment Development.
The department reported that employment in July grew by 66,727 to a record 2.54 million.
"Although some of the July employment gain was attributable to the federal government's efforts at summer job creation, there is also an encouraging trend employment growth statewide," said Mark L. Wasserman, the department's secretary.
But he added that, "Other economic indicators show that Maryland's recovery from the recession remains slow and uneven. For example, the number of housing permits authorized fell, and retail sales were below last year's levels.
