PNC bringing bank units under a single name.

PNC Financial Corp. said Thursday that it would change its name to PNC Bank Corp. and rename its banking subsidiaries PNC Bank.

The banking units now operate under 10 names, most of them inherited.

The consistent identity is part of a larger effort by the Pittsburgh-based holding company to unify its roughly 500 offices in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and Delaware.

A Phase-In for Subsidiaries

The parent's new mane is to take effect in February. The banks and other affiliates will change over between February and late 1993 or early 1994.

In a related move, PNC said it would combine the charters of its flagship, Pittsburgh National, and Provident National of Philadelphia in February. Marine Bank of Erie, Pa., will join them in April.

Consultant Aided Decision

Spokesman Jonathan Williams said PNC worked with the New York identity consultant Siegel & Gale to develop the new name. Ketchum Advertising, Pittsburgh will promote it.

PNC did not disclose the cost of the changeover irman Thomas H. O'Brien said the move "will communicate the collective strength and shared vision" of the company.
