If CNB Bancshares is buying another bank, it probably means Sue Brauer has been working on the weekend again
Mrs. Brauer, 33, vice president for corporate planning, is a member of the due-diligence team that pores over books at the bank being bought.
Moreover, she probably had a part in deciding what bank is being acquired, because her job involves "up-front" screening of potential targets for CNB's top management.
And CNB has been a busy buyer. Since 1986, it has acquired 10 banks in Indian Kentucky, and Illinois, more than doubled its assets to $2 billion.
Mrs. Brauer entered banking through her job as a certified public accountant in the banking practice at Deloitte & Touche's St. Louis office.
A native of St. Louis and a graduate of the University of Missouri, she found banking to be challenging and satisfying. And it seemed to fit in with her own tendency to be a "well-organized person.
After 3 1/2 years with Deloitte & Touche, she relocated to the southern Indiana city with her husband, who is also an accountant, and took a job at CNB. She has been with the bank for seven years.
Mrs. Brauer describes her job in corporate planning as "very project-oriented." In 1991, she helped set up the bank's $15 million debt offering, its first visit to the capital markets in many years.
Lately, she has been working with consultants hired by CNB to examine its various lines of business as the bank looks to adjust its strategy for the remainder of the 1990s.
She reports frequently to H. Lee Cooper, CNB's chairman and chief executive officer, and David L. Knapp, chief financial officer.
Ultimately, Mrs. Brauer would like to move further into management and operations, and is intrigued by the challenge of integrating purchased banks into the corporate and business culture.
She is active in her professional association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and its Indiana affiliate. She and her husband have a two-year-old boy.
