Citizens Financial Group appointed Robert M. Mahoney president and director of its nascent Citizens Bank of Massachusetts subsidiary.

Citizens Financial, a subsidiary of Royal Bank of Scotland, is based in Providence, R.I.

Mr. Mahoney, 45, will be responsible for citizens' banking activities in the Bay State stemming from the pending merger of its Plymouth-based operations in Massachusetts with those of Boston Five Cents Savings Bank. The deal is expected to be completed later this month, at which point Mr. Mahoney's appointment will become effective.

Mr. Mahoney is a 22-year veteran of Bank of Boston, where he is department executive for New England corporate banking. He previously served as president of the bank's Massachusetts banking division, which focuses on commercial and consumer activities, and in posts in the United Kingdom and the western United States.

Richard S. Straczynski, who joined the company last summer from Fleet Financial Corp. to become southeastern Massachusetts regional president of Citizens, will report to Mr. Mahoney.
