Don Mattingly, the New York Yankees' first baseman, ended the 1993 season with 154 hits, 17 home runs, 86 runs batted in, and $37,700 in donations to charities for the mentally retarded in Westchester County, N.Y.
The contributions, made to the Westchetter Association for Retarded Citizens and the Westchester-Putnam Special Olympics, came under the aegis of Municipal Bond Investors Assurance Corp. and Capital Reinsurance Corp.
At the start of the last eight seasons, MBIA has pledged $100 for every Mattingly hit and $300 for each home run. Capital Re, which has participated for five seasons, promised $200 for each run batted in.
Since 1986, MBIA has donated $155,000 through the program. Capital Re has given $60,000 since 1989.
MBIA, which is headquartered in Westchester, also holds an annual golf and tennis tournament on behalf of the two local charities. This year, the MBIA Invitational raised more than $340,000.
