Banking stocks were mixed as the overall market first momentum, then eased back to a smaller gain.

Keycorp rebounded from merger-related weakness of the previous two days, gaining 75 cents a share, to $36.75. Its merger partner, Society Corp., was down 12.5 cents, to $30.625, at the close.

Greater New York Savings Bank rose $1.25 a share, or 21%, to $7.125, after Smith Barney Shearson Inc. initiated coverage of the stock with a "buy" rating. Also enjoying a gain was Integra Financial Corp., ahead $1, to $49.75

On the down side, Northern Trust Corp. was down $1.25, to $42; State Street Boston Corp. slipped 50 cents, to $36.625; and Fifth Third Bancorp. was off 50 cents, to $53.50.
