N.J.'s Sterling Bank hires King as president, chief executive.

Robert H. King has joined Sterling Bank, Mount Laurel, N.J., as president and chief executive officer.

He has also been elected to the commercial bank's board.

Ronald P. Sandmeyer is the board's chairman.

Mr. King was chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Chestnut Hill National Bank in Philadelphia.

Before that, he was president and chief executive officer of Commerce Bank Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Earlier, Mr. King was a vice president of Industrial Valley Bank, Philadelphia, involved in regional commercial lending.

He started his banking career in 1968 with the former Girard Bank of Philadelphia.

Continental Savings of America, San Francisco, said John Osslund has joined it as vice president and loan production manager for its new San Diego wholesale loan center.

He will be responsible for all wholesale mortgage loan production in the San Diego metropolitan area.

Mr. Osslund has 18 years experience in the mortgage banking and lending business. He had been loan production manager for Western Federal Savings' mortgage banking operations for the San Diego region, serving more than 200 approved mortgage brokers.

Michael Fowler has joined Continental as assistant vice president and loan production manager for the new Covina wholesale loan center.

Mr. Fowler will be responsible for all wholesale mortgage loan production in the San Gabriel Valley region as far as the Inland Empire.

University National Bank and Trust Co., Palo Alto, Calif, has appointed James G. Ochsner as senior vice president and loan officer.

He will be responsible for personal and business loan portfolios.

Mr. Ochsner was formerly with the Pacific Bank, San Francisco, as senior vice president and manager at its main office.

Santa Monica (Calif.) Bank said Aubrey L. Austin, president, has assumed the additional post of chief executive officer.

He succeeds Joe L. Walling, who has retired from the post but will continue as chairman of the board.

MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Hudson Valley National Bank, Yonkers, N.Y., a subsidiary of Hudson Valley Holding Corp., has appointed John E. Malesardi as vice president and investment officer.

He had been the bank's vice president and comptroller.

Mr. Malesardi will be responsible for the bank's investment portfolio, developing and recommending short and long-term investments as well as setting commercial and consumer deposit rates.

He will also be a member of the bank's asset and liability committee.

Steven E. De Young has been appointed to the bank's business development board.

Mr. De Young is the president of Steven E. De Young PC, Hawthorne, a firm concentrating on residential and commercial real estate closing and mortgages.

At Hudson Valley Mortgage Corp., Susan K. Radzilowicz has been promoted to the rank of operations manager and Maureen Petrellese to underwriting manager.

First Bank of Philadelphia has hired three senior vice presidents.

James T. Schaeffer is the bank's chief financial officer. He is responsible for accounting and investment, as well as data processing. Mr. Schaeffer had been a manager for Ernst & Young.

Joseph M. Matisoff is chief lending officer, heading the bank's credit and lending departments. He was senior lending officer at Covenant Bank, Haddonfield, N.J.

Darla F. Wilson was named senior vice president-administration at First Bank of Philadelphia. She leads the bank's administrative and human resources departments as well as overseeing its branch operations and marketing programs.

Ms. Wilson had been an employment manager at Mellon Bank in Philadelphia as well as at Maryland Bank in Newark, Del.

Fidelity New York Federal Savings Bank, Garden City, elected Thomas V. Powderly chairman of the board.

He succeeds Thomas D. Lovely, who has resigned.

Mr. Powderly continues as president and chief executive officer of the bank, which has 18 branches and recently converted from mutual to stock form.
