Banc One's deal for Firstier gets Fed nod.

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Reserve had approved the applications of Banc One Corp. and Banc One Beta Corp.; of Columbus, Ohio, to acquire Omaha's Firstier Financial Inc.

The acquisition will mark Banc One's entry into Nebraska, where it will be that state's second-largest commercial banking organization, controlling deposits of $2.3 billion, or 12% of the state total.

Separately, the Fed approved the application of South Trust Corp., Birmingham, Ala., to acquire two Florida branches of Anchor Savings Bank, Hewlett, N.Y.

The Alabama company plans to merge the Fernandina Beach and St. Augustine branches into South Trust Bank of Jacksonville.
