Iowa.

State officials are considering budget cuts of up to 3% for some state agencies to help make up for anticipated losses in revenues caused by the floods that have deluged the state.

The state has reduced its estimates for revenue growth in fiscal 1994 by $43 million, said Richard Vohs, press secretary for Gov. Terry Branstad. State officials are considering selective budget cuts because they do not want to tap the state's anticipated fiscal 1994 yearend balance, Vohs said.

The state is planning to use the funds to help eliminate its deficit as measured on a generally accepted accounting principles basis. At the end of fiscal 1994 on June 30, the state anticipates its GAAP deficit will be about $336 million, according to state officials.

Vohs said the governor could decide by the end of October whether to call a special session of the legislature to consider the cuts.

State officials have estimated flood damage in Iowa at more than $3 billion.
