Philadelphia Fed chief sees steady growth.

SCRANTON, Pa. - The president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia said he expects the national economy to continue to grow at a pace of 2.5% to 3% for the rest of this year and through most of 1994.

Edward Boehne, president of the bank since 1981, gave a generally positive economic forecast for both the nation and northeastern Pennsylvania to a gathering of 100 business and banking leaders at the University of Scranton on Tuesday.

While acknowledging there is still an air of uncertainty and caution permeating the national economy, in part because of high profile corporate layoffs, he noted that employment gains have been more substantial this year than last and the low interest rates have helped keep housing construction strong.
