Richard Ciccarone, senior vice president and director of tax-exempt fixed-income research at Chicago-based Kemper Securities Inc., won the The Bond Buyer's All-American Municipal Analysts award for the most effective municipal general analyst.
Ciccarone was one of five candidates voted for by colleagues during the The Bond Buyer's All-American Municipal Analysts conference, held at the Pierre Hotel in midtown Manhattan on Monday.
The other candidates were: William W. Fish, senior vice president and manager of municipal research for Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Securities Corp.; George Friedlander, managing director of portfolio strategy at Smith Barney Shearson; Aaron Gurwitz, a senior economist and vice president of fixed-income research at Goldman, Sachs & Co.; and Robert Muller, managing director of municipal bond research at J.P. Morgan & Co.
Ciccarone also won the municipal bond generalist award in Global Guaranty's 1992 All-American Municipal Analysts First Team competition.
Ciccarone attributed the repeated recognition to his research staff, saying that having "a good staff made me a better generalist," He also pointed to the commitment of Kemper to offering investors "objective and quality research."
Before joining Kemper in 1989, Ciccarone was vice president and director of unit investment trust research at Van Kampen Merrit. He was also project manager and co-developer of the Merritt System, a credit analysis data base and software package related to hospital, public power, and airport bonds.
Ciccarone is also a co-founder and past chairman of the National Federation of Municipal Analysts. He is a member of the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board's advisory committee on continuing disclosure information.
