Ex-NationsBank exec named Provident Life president.

J. Harold Chandler was selected as the new president and chief executive of Provident Life and Accident Co. of America, one day after he resigned from NationsBank Corp.

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Provident Life, a Fortune 500 company with $16 billion of assets, said Mr. Chandler would assume his new post on Monday.

Provident Life's previous chief executive, Winston W. Walker, had announced his resignation in May.

Mr. Chandler, 44, had been president of NationsBank's Mid-Atlantic Banking Group, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, and northern Virginia. until Tuesday, when he stepped down and was replaced by R. Eugene "Gene" Taylor, the former president of NationsBank's Florida bank subsidiary.

A veteran of Atlanta-based C&S/Sovran Corp.. a NationsBank predecessor company, Mr. Chandler gained experience in the insurance industry by working as a director of two Washington-area insurance companies: Colonial Life and Accident Co. and Blue Cross-Blue Shield.
