Major bank stocks, excepting Wells Fargo, were lower as investors continued to await the congressional vote on the North American Free Trade Agreement.

J.P. Morgan & Co. was off $1 to $69.875 in late trading, Bank of New York slipped $1.125 to $54.125, MBNA Corp. declined $1 to $32 and Crestar Financial Corp. dropped $1.375 to $37.75.

Among the few gainers besides Wells. First Interstate Bancorp. was ahead 37.5 cents to $57.375, Huntington Bancshares was up 12.5 cents to $22.625 and SouthTrust Corp. gained 12.5 cents to $18.
