Bank stocks were mixed as increases in short-term interest rates appeared to hold back a general recovery in share prices.

NationsBank Corp. slid 50 cents a share, to $47.125; Society Corp. was down 75 cents, to $28.75; and its merger partner, Keycorp. eased 62.5 cents, to $34.875. First Interstate Bancorp was off 87.5 cents. to $58.375.

But BankAmerica Corp. was up 87.5 cents, to $44.50 a share, Bankers Trust New York Corp. rose 50 cents, to $76.50, Mellon Bank Corp. gained $ 1, to $ 5 5.50; and First of America Bank Corp. was ahead 50 cents, to $39.125.
