Loans in San Antonio up 7.9% in quarter.

SAN ANTONIO - Deposits and loans at San Antonio banks rose 6.6% and 7.9%, respectively, in the first quarter from the year-earlier period.

The increases represent the first time since 1987 that loan totals have grown, according to Dick Evans, president of Frost Bank, a unit of Cullen/Frost Bankers Inc. While consumer loan demand has been growing steadily for some time, commercial borrowing has begun to increase during the past six months, he said.

The data, compiled by Cullen Bank, exclude some banks in statewide branching systems that do not break out local numbers. Frost National, according to the data, had more than three times the deposits and loans of its nearest competitor, Broadway National Bank, at March 31, 1992.
