Bank stocks scored strong gains on Monday amid a general market rally sparked by falling interest rates.

Big California banks fared especially well. First Interstate Bancorp jumped $3.25 to $64, while Wells Fargo & Co. rose $4 to $111.125 and BankAmerica Corp. moved up $1.25 to $45.25.

But other banks joined in. J.P. Morgan & Co. soared $1.625 to $67.50, Bankers Trust New York Corp. gained $1.875 to $73.125, First Chicago Corp. improved $1.625 to $43, and Norwest Corp. rose $2 to $54.

Also, CoreStates Financial Corp. gained $1.625 to $56 and Bank of New York Co. was up $1.875 to $60.75.
