J.P. Morgan & Co., Bankers Trust New York Corp., along with First Chicago Corp., were the top gainers on Thursday as banks staged a partial recovery from their recent price weakness.

Morgan was up $1.625 to $71.75 and Bankers was ahead $1,875 to $77 in late trading.

Others enjoying strong outings were Chemical Banking Corp., up 75 cents to $39.75, First Interstate Bancorp, up $1 cents to $64.625 and First Bank System Inc., up 62.5 cents to $30.375.

Crestar Financial Corp. surrendered the most ground, falling $1.25 to $42.125.
