Senate panel approves Levitt for SEC.

WASHINGTON -- The Senate Banking Committee unanimously, approved Arthur Levitt Jr. as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, clearing the way for full Senate consideration of Mr. Levitt's nomination.

Also approved were the nominations of Alan Blinder and Joseph Stiglitz to serve on the President's Council of Economic Advisers. Richard Carnell was approved for the post of assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial Institutions. Those nominations also go to the full Senate.
