Banking committee clears Arthur Levitt for top slot at SEC.

WASHINGTON -- Arthur Levitt Jr., President Clinton's nominee to become chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was unanimously approved by the Senate Banking Committee yesterday.

Levitt's nomination was one of six approved by the panel yesterday and sent to the full Senate, which is expected take final action before Congress is scheduled to adjourn on Aug. 6 for a month-long recess.

The committee also approved the nominations of Alan Blinder and Joseph Stiglitz as members of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

The three other nominations approved by the committee were Richard Scott Camell as assistant secretary of the Treasury for financial institutions; Susan Gaffney as inspector general of the Department of Housing and Urban Development; and G. Edward Deseve as chief financial officer of HUD.
