Wells seeks brokers for its proprietaries.

Wells Fargo & Co. is trying to attract new brokers to sell its Stagecoach and Overland Express mutual funds.

The San Francisco-based banking company is advertising in industry publications for licensed representatives to market the proprietary mutual funds in branches.

Company officials said earlier this year that Wells Fargo was planning to increase its mutual fund sales force from 200 to 300 by the end of 1993.

But a spokeswoman downplayed the ad campaign, saying it was part of Wells Fargo's "standard recruiting practice. There is no big push on to hire a lot of extra people."

Successful applicants would become dual employees of Wells Fargo and Marketing One, an Oregon-based firm that does the actual recruiting, licensing, and managing of the sales force.
