Stratus Computer Inc., a computer vendor based in Marlboro, Mass., introduced a line of seven computers designed for use on networks of personal computers in retail branches, or to link banks and their customers.
The new systems, called servers, range in price from $69,000 to $500,000 and can be used with networks of up to 100 PC users. They are fault-tolerant, meaning that all the major elements of each computer are duplicated, so if one component fails the computer continues to run.
The new systems are less expensive than the large-scale computers that typically run funds-transfer networks.
