First Interstate Bancorp. was the biggest gainer among major bank stocks, up $1.875 to $64.50 as investors seemed to approve its efforts to expand the bank's Southern California market share.

The biggest loser was Banc One Corp., down $1 to $53.25 after announcing it will buy Capital City Bancorp., Salt Lake City. Deal terms were not disclosed.

Other banks were mixed. J.P. Morgan & Co. was up 87.5 cents to $72.75 and Bankers Trust New York Corp. was ahead 62.5 cents to $29.50 in late trading.

BankAmerica Corp. was up 37.5 cents to $46.875, and NationsBank was up 37.5 cents to $52.75.
