Monday's market.

Major bank stocks were mostly lower, apparently in reaction to falling interest rates.

In contrast, other stocks posted gains.

In late trading, Banc One Corp. fell $1.125 to $52.25, NationsBank Corp. declined $1 to $51.875, First Chicago Corp. fell 87.5 cents to $45.625, and Chemical Banking Corp. slipped 75 cents to $40.75.

Analysts said investors are worried that banks' interest income will be hurt by lower rates, especially at banks that had positioned themselves for rising rates.

Among Monday's gainers, J. P. Morgan & Co. was up 50 cents to $74.125 and NBD Bancorp rose 50 cents to $33.
