Commercial of N.Y. opening Mexico office.

Commercial Bank of New York will open a Mexican representative office, the bank announced.

Set up in 1988, the $800 million-asset bank provides international private banking services to domestic and foreign clients and commercial banking services for small and medium-sized companies in the New York metropolitan area.

The bank has one main office and five branches in Manhattan and one foreign representative office in Buenos Aires.

U.S. banks have been drafting plans to expand in Mexico if the North American Free Trade Agreement is passed.

They are currently barred under Mexican law from operating banks in Mexico.
