Star System seen in talks on buying two networks.

Star System Inc., one of the nation's largest electronic funds transfer networks, may be looking to grow via the acquisition route.

San Diego-based Star System has been conducting separate merger talks with the Exchange, Bellevue, Wash., owner of the Accel/Exchange EFT network; and Cactus Network, a Phoenix-based point of sale network.

The negotiations were reported in Card FAX, an industry newsletter.

Star System had no comment on the report. Officials from the Exchange and Cactus did not return phone calls.

Major Players

Star and the Exchange are two of the industry's major players.

Their networks are among the nation's 10 largest, with Star processing more than 90 million transactions a month and Accel/Exchange more than 20 million.

Cactus, which carries only POS transactions, handles more than one million transactions a month.
