Many major bank stocks gained ground on Monday, including Crestar Financial Corp., up $1.125 to $42.375, and Wells Fargo & Co., up $2 to $121.125 in late trading.

Also ahead were Signet Banking Corp., up 75 cents to $31.875, First Chicago Corp., up 75 cents to $46.125, Keycorp, up 50 cents to $38.25, and Chase Manhattan Corp., up 50 cents to $36.375.

But Mellon Bank Corp. remained weak, slipping 75 cents to $54.75; Fifth Third Bancorp was off 87.5 cents to $51.375; Northern Trust Corp. moved down 50 cents to $40.25, and Integra Financial Corp. dropped 37.5 cents to $48.
