Q: What is your policy on charging your customer for use of ATMs?

We used to charge customers for using our machines, but we don't anymore. At this point, we charge for only when a customer uses another network or bank's machine.

We charged for "on-us" items for about six years, but our marketplace surveys showed us that customers didn't like being charged, and we determined that this policy Was a significant negative.

Three months ago, we stopped charging customers for using our ATMs. The reception has been very good, and new accounts have increased.

We make profits on the shared revenue side - when our customer uses someone else's ATM - but we also make a profit when other [banks'] customers use our machines.

We have a large proprietary ATM network and we encourage Banc One customers to transact at our machines where there's no charge. We are part of a number of regional ATM networks, so when a customer can't use a Banc One terminal, we charge a fee for the use of other networks.

Depending on the target population, we also have special package pricing on accounts where transactions are unlimited and customers aren't charged.

College students tell us they want to use ATMs, so we offer them a checking account with point of sale and ATM-only access. When the want to write a check, we make that happen for them, and they are charged for the check.

We charge $1 for all transactions in all non-centerbank ATMs.

We don't charge for inquiries, only for withdrawals. We are also looking into fee waivers at foreign machines based on market segment and balance levels.

We just instituted this non-Centerbank ATM charge on May 1. We want to encourage our customers to use our ATMs and that's why we don't charge them.

We're trying to move the teller transactions from the window to the ATM. At this point, charging for "on-us" transactions would be a deterrent to that.

We want to encourage our customers to use our ATMS and to take advantage of them, so we don't charge fees for "on-us" use.

We have always had that policy in place. At Hibernia, we have approximately 100 ATMs. The ATM service is offered in all our of retail packages. It is one of the things we actively market to every new client.

We are also looking strongly at [the next] generation of ATMs. These machines have additional cassettes or bins that you can dispense other items besides cash.

These machines also print fun balance statements. I anticipate that before yearend we will be doing something in this area.
